Psychologists say dark personality traits share 1 common thing

Psychologists say dark personality traits share 1 common thingPsychologists say dark personality traits share 1 common thingSelfish coworkers, narcissistic bosses, entitled clients - as you progress in your career, you will, unfortunately, encounter all the many sides of bad people to work with, but a new study inPsychological Review argues that these dark personality traits share one common core.Prioritizing personal gain is D-factorIf you want to avoid one of the nine dark personality traits - egoism, Machiavellianism, moral disengagement, narcissism, psychological entitlement, psychopathy, sadism, self-interest, and spitefulness - watch out for people who will put their personal ambition above all else. When the researchers from the University of Copenhagen surveyed more than 2,500 people, they found a common thread between each of the peoples dark personality traits the D-factor, which was defined as the general tendency to maximize ones individual utility - disregarding, acce pting, or malevolently provoking disutility for others - accompanied by beliefs that serve as justifications. In other words, you do not care about what it takes to get what you want. When you are selfishly motivated by your own individual gain, you will be able to justify harming others in the process and avoid feeling the usual feelings of guilt of shame. In practice, this research suggests that if someone is exhibiting dark traits like narcissism, they are likely to manifest other undesirable behaviors. An individual who exhibits a particular malevolent behavior (such as likes to humiliate others) will have a higher likelihood to engage in other malevolent activities, too (such as cheating, lying, or stealing),Ingo Zettler, one of the authors of the study said.If someone is acting like a spiteful egomaniac to you one day, they may be likely to act morally superior the next. You can use the D-Factor toassess the likelihood that the person will re-offend or engage in more harmful beha vior, Zettler suggests.Once you recognize one of the dark traits in a colleague, this is your red flag to avoid them, so that that you do not get entangled in their dark web when they are likely to act out again.

LinkedIn top influencer J.T. ODonnell on the future of influencer marketing

LinkedIn top influencer J.T. ODonnell on the future of influencer marketingLinkedIn top influencer J.T. ODonnell on the future of influencer marketingIn 2012, J.T. ODonnell was invited by LinkedIn to be a member of a top secret project. After signing a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) and agreeing to contribute regularly to this new platform, she was told she would be dubbed a LinkedIn Top Influencer.ODonnell, who is the founder and CEO of Work It Daily, an online career coaching platform that garners over 1.5 mio page views each month, is also a paid columnist for Inc. Magazine and a former contributing author to Fast Company. J.T. was one of 300 or so people to make the initial invite list to join LinkedIn as a Top Influencer. Otzu sichs included the likes of Barack Obama, Richard Branson, and Arianna Huffington.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWhat she didnt realize then, but qu ickly learned after, is that she was part of the content engine that would take LinkedIn from a social network to a media publishing platform.Since launching, LinkedIn has invited others to join the ranks of being a Top Influencer but not by many.In this LinkedIn Help response from 2017, LinkedIn describes the size and scope of the Influencer ProgramLinkedIn Influencers are selected by invitation only and comprise a global collective of 500+ of the worlds forefruchtwein thinkers, leaders, and innovators. As leaders in their industries and geographies, they discuss newsy and trending topics such as the future of higher education, the workplace culture at Amazon, the plunge in oil prices, and the missteps of policymakers.According to LinkedIn, these Influencers are the most engaged, prolific, and thoughtful contributors. But LinkedIn is no longer inviting anyone else to become an Influencer ever. Those wanting the Influencer badge on their profiles can petition, said J.T., but the in vites have stopped. The initial list of Influencers will remain the same, plus now everyone can publish their own thought leadership content with LinkedIn Articles. But, writing an article doesnt make you a LinkedIn Influencer, which is explained in this LinkedIn Help response on publishingWhile publishing an article doesnt mean youre a LinkedIn Influencer, it does allow you to further establish your professional identity by expressing your opinions and sharing your experiences. It also just so happens to make LinkedIn a top spot for content marketing. According to Hootsuite, two million posts, articles, and videos are published on LinkedIn every day and 94% of B2B marketers on social media use LinkedIn to publish content. For all intents and purposes, LinkedIns Top Influencer program did its job and its paying off for them in spades.Whats Next for Influencer Marketing? In this Forbes article on The Real Problem With Influencer Marketing, writer and marketer Mallory Walsh says, As an in dustry, weve lost sight of the fact that social influencers are inherently inauthentic the content theyre creating isnt earned its just a modern form of paid advertising and content creation. While popular, influencer marketing is being met with a fair amount of skepticism as consumer trust continues to decline. Sites like LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram are chock-full of celebrity-esque influencers being paid to deliver messages on behalf of big brands.A 2018 report by Stackla revealed that only 23% of people believe content from celebrities and influencers is influential. Alternatively, 60% say content from friends or family influences their purchasing decisions.Micro-influencers, on the other hand that is, real people like me-type influencers are viewed as much more trustworthy. Not surprisingly, the same Stackla study found that 60% of consumers say user-generated content is the most authentic and influential form of content.2019 Influencer Tips From Top Influencer J.T. ODonne llTo meet the rising consumer demand for more authenticity, J.T. recommends telling it how it is when it comes to creating content. If you really know your subject, you should be able to explain it and write about it in such a way that a five-year-old could understand it, says J.T. Your writing should make it feel like were in the room with you.J.T. also advises to play the long-game when it comes to influencer marketing.Whats the ah-ha moment youre trying to get someone to have? Whats the one thing thats going to make someone go, Oh I hadnt thought about that before, says J.T. Its the belief, the truth, the message youre trying to drive and thats what makes influencers sticky. The old adage that all PR is good PR, including the bad, is not something J.T. believes in or recommends when it comes to influencer marketing.People mistake flash with success. They think theyll become a fast influencer by being salacious and confrontational, but theres a shelf life to that, says J.T. Thos e influencers have to continue to be more and more outrageous or they risk fizzling out. Its a slower way to build a following, but people want you to tell it to them straight. Its not always sexy, but its about being real and being thoughtful and thats what people want.J.T. also recommends researching platforms before agreeing to publish content for free.Learn from my mistakes, says J.T. Anytime youre putting your content somewhere other than on your own platform you need to calculate what the ROI is going to be of putting it there. How are they going to benefit? How are you going to benefit? Think about that and be comfortable with whatever that ROI is.She also encourages influencers to hold back a little.Be careful about the information youre putting out there. Its good to put out a lot of content, but also hold back a little and figure out how youre going to monetize your message, says J.T.For additional influencer platforms, specifically for coaching like what J.T. provides at Work It Daily, she recommendsCommonGenius an expert marketplace that enables professionals to schedule on-demand, 1-on-1 video meetings with the worlds leading consultants, coaches and executives.Forbes Coaches Council a community for successful business and career coaches.Medium which aims to tap into the brains of the worlds most insightful writers, thinkers, and storytellers to bring the smartest takes on topics that matter.Brittney Kowalski is the founder and lead consultant at BMUR Branding Group, LLC. Hired! For a Career Boost, Follow the Trends

Hired! For a Career Boost, Follow the Trends Hired! For a Career Boost, Follow the Trends Anyone considering the nursing field must investigate and fully understand each sector in the profession to be successful.“The single greatest challenge to a person entering nursing is to ascertain what part of nursing you want to go into,” said Robert N., a registered nurse who has worked as a consultant in the medical field for the past 20 years with experience in administration, counseling and all phases of nursing. “When people say, ‘Oh, you’ve worked as a nurse,’ that really doesn’t describe what I have done, although I am a nurse. I have had my RN for decades, but I also have counseling credentials and licenses with a master’s in healthcare administration. So I have gone far beyond just being a nurse.”Robert was drawn to the medical profession from the earliest age. “I got my first job in a hospital when I was 12 years old,” he recalled. “My aunt was a half-owner in a hospital. … She employed me part-time to be at the front desk, basically answering th e phone.” After high school, he followed his passion for medical issues by becoming a combat medic during the Vietnam War. The Army gave him invaluable experience as well as access to a great education. While serving in the military, Robert attended a steady stream of nursing programs to become certified as a physician’s assistant and a registered respiratory therapist. “I took advantage of the situation, so when I got out of the military I was pretty set up in my career to do just about anything I wanted to do.”After leaving the military, Robert acquired a B.S.N., got counseling credentials, obtained a national certification in the state of Texas to council alcohol and drug abusers, and began working as a consultant for the Department of Labor as the chief nurse consultant for a team managing an 11-state region. But after 17 years of working in counseling, Robert realized it was time to re-invent his career.A fast track to growth Through his membership in UpLadder, Robert learned about and applied for a top executive position at MedicalEdge Healthcare Group Inc., based in Dallas. He was impressed by how quickly the company had expanded. “MedicalEdge started off as an imaging and X-ray facility here in Texas and then grew very quickly to several other states along the Eastern seaboard. They even expanded from medical imaging to cancer research and cancer treatment.”When MedicalEdge invited Robert to interview, he was surprised to find himself discussing a post different from the one advertised. He was also impressed by the scope of career opportunities within the firm; the head of marketing and recruiting who interviewed him had quickly developed his own career at MedicalEdge, having worked as an imaging technician just two years before. Robert realized the company would provide him with a ground-floor opportunity to advance. Robert now oversees operations at the brand-new men’s cancer center at MedicalE dge’s multifaceted, multiservice treatment facility in Plano, Texas. At a time when few professions seem impervious to layoffs, healthcare â€" and nursing in particular â€" looks to many like a safe haven. Robert warned that success requires certain attributes: “The No. 1 job in nursing is to have the ability â€" whether it is natural or learned â€" to be able to nurture. The research shows that nurturing is what gets people well the quickest,” he noted before adding: “And you know what? Men can nurture just as well, and in some cases better, than women! So it is not limited to what sex you happen to be. It is a thing of the heart.”Having worked in nursing for more than 10? years, Robert recommends that anyone considering the field must investigate and fully understand each sector in the profession: “I went into nursing early. Back then I didn’t realize how important it was to know what part of nursing I wanted to work in. I looked at it like, ‘I can do anything I wan t as soon as I get this degree or this license; the doors are wide open.’ And at that point in history, they were. You could be a nurse and work in any part of nursing you want. Today that is not true: They want the nurse that is not only top of the class, but they want the nurse that has that specific certification in that area.”His advice? “Be as specific as you can. For example, the most current nursing trend today is wound care. Most people don’t know that. And that could be [open] to a nurse with a two-year degree or a LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse) with a one-year degree. So if that nurse were to take one week out of his or her time, and become wound care-certified, they are good to go for $70,000 or $80,000 right there. So the message is: follow the trends.”

Weird and Unique Job Interview Questions to Ask

Weird and Unique Job Interview Questions to Ask Weird and Unique Job Interview Questions to Ask Lynne Sarikas, director of the MBA Career Center at the Northeastern University business school, believes that more and more businesses are asking unusual job interview questions as part of their candidate job interview process. Microsofts job interview questions are legendary (examples include: How many golf balls does it take to fill a 747? Why is a manhole cover round?).  But, Microsoft, at least in developer interviews, appears to have moved away from puzzle questions and is asking candidates to solve whiteboard code problems during interviews instead. However, other employers are using unusual questions in their candidate selection process for new reasons. The job search advice industry is so prolific that any candidate who researches knows he should prepare brief responses in advance to frequent standard questions. These include job interview questions such as: what are your strengths and weaknesses and what makes you the most qualified candidate for this job. Interviewers use unusual job interview questions to assess how well the candidate responds to an unexpected question or scenario. Most unusual job interview questions do not have right or wrong answers. These job interview questions provide the candidate with the opportunity, according to Sarikas, to demonstrate quick thinking, poise, creativity, and even a sense of humor. She says, The interviewers are trying to catch a glimpse of the unrehearsed candidate in an unguarded moment. There is no way to prepare for these off-the-wall job interview questions, so the interviewer can observe how the candidate responds and composes his or her thoughts. Some interviewers also ask unusual job interview questions to gain insight into the candidates thought processes- they want to see how the candidate will think about the unusual job interview question. Make sure, however, in all of these cases that you know what you are looking for with each weird and unique job interview question that you ask. Part of your hopes can target any insightful responses and another  part can target facets such as how quickly the candidate recovers from a surprise question. Example Tough/Unusual Job Interview Questions Sarikas suggests using a couple of the following job interview questions during an interview to assess your candidates skills and cultural fit. If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be?If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you?If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?If you had to be shipwrecked on a deserted island, but all your human needs- such as food and water- were taken care of, what two items would you want to have with you?If you had six months with no obligations or financial constraints, what would you do with the time? If you had only six months left to live, what would you do with the time?If you could have dinner with anyone from history, who would it be and why?If you could compare yourself with any animal, which would it be and why?If you were a type of food, what type of food would you be?If you won $20 million in the lottery, what would you do with the money? If you were a salad, what kind of dressing would you want? How do I rate as an interviewer? If you were a car, what type would you be?Who do you admire most and why? In the news story of your life, what would the headline say? Behavioral Job Interview Questions Simply, behavioral interview questions ask how the candidate handled similar situations in the past. They dont ask a candidate to look into a crystal ball and predict their future behavior. Sarikas suggests the following questions as general, basic behavioral job interview questions. (Additional suggested behavioral job interview questions follow.) Describe a situation when you took a risk professionally. What was the outcome?Tell me about a time others disagreed with your recommended course of action. How did you persuade them to your plans and what were the results?Describe a situation where you worked effectively as part of a team to accomplish a goal on time and within budget. What was your role? What did you learn?Describe a situation in which you worked as part of a team, but your team failed to accomplish the goal on time and within budget. What was your role? What did you learn? How would your current boss or a team member describe you? What would he/she say are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?Describe a complex problem you had to solve and walk me through your thinking as you solved it.Tell me about a creative solution you developed for a challenging situation or problem.Describe a situation working with a group or team where there was interpersonal conflict. Describe how you approached the conflict. What worked and what didnt? How did you manage the outcome?Describe a situation you feel you should have handled differently. Describe a situation in which you aspired to reach a goal. What obstacles did you confront along the way? What did you do to overcome them? What is the most stressful situation you have handled and what was the outcome?Tell me about a time when you had to win someone over to your way of thinking. How did you accomplish this? What was the outcome? Behavioral job interview questions are your best approach during candidate job interviews. But, the occasional unusual job interview question has the potential to yield thoughtful information about the candidates you interview. Use both for effective candidate selection.

2016 Presidential Candidate Resumes

2016 Presidential Candidate Resumes 2016 Presidential Candidate Resumes Would your resume make the cut? One of the most effective ways of landing a job is through networking. That’s because even the most expertly written resume doesn’t give the full story â€" especially when hiring managers spend about six seconds scanning each one. So we thought it might be fun to apply that same philosophy to the 2016 presidential campaign. If American voters spent six seconds scanning each candidate’s resume for past experience and accomplishments, what conclusions might they draw? Let’s take a look at the candidates resumes:   Hillary Clinton Served as First Lady (1993-2001) Served as the first female senator from New York (2001-2009) Served as Secretary of State (2009-2013) Clapped backup for Stevie Nicks and Michael Jackson Won a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album (It takes a village, 1997) Campaigned for Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater Later campaigned for Democrats Worked in a fish processing plant in Alaska Served on the boards of TCBY and Walmart Served on Richard Nixon’s impeachment investigation committee Taught at the University of Arkansas law school Donald Trump Once owned the New Jersey Generals football club (USFL) Was voted the class “Ladies Man” at the New York Military Academy Was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007 for The Apprentice Successfully filed for corporate bankruptcy four times Owner of the Miss Universe Organization, which includes the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants Author of numerous books Accumulated a net worth of approximately $4 billion Developed, built, opened, and operated numerous hotels, casinos, and other properties Served as financial advisor to Mike Tyson and hosted his Atlantic City fight against Michael Spinks Bernie Sanders Marched for civil rights in the 1960s Became only the third socialist ever elected to Congress Racked up 71% of the votes in a 2012 Senate run Filibustered on the Senate floor for eight hours in 2010 to oppose tax breaks for the rich Inspired a line of “Feel the Bern” underwear Accomplished folk musician featured on the album “We Shall Overcome” Featured character in a video game, “Bernie-Arcade” Previously worked as a writer, a carpenter, and a filmmaker Previously served as mayor of Burlington, VT The point of all of this (other than entertainment)? If the people vying for “leader of the free world” can get there with resumes like these, you can certainly land that dream job.

35 Daily Habits You Should Really Steal From Successful People

35 Daily Habits You Should Really Steal From Successful People 35 Daily Habits You Should Really Steal From Successful People When it comes to achieving success, actions speak louder than words, connections, or opportunities. Think about the importance of your daily habits, for example. Do you run five miles every morning because you value being fit and healthy? Or is it your regular routine to watch three hours of television every night because you feel the need to escape? Without a doubt, what you achieve in life depends on your actions. Take it from 35 founders, entrepreneurs, and executives who have achieved great things and credit simple daily rituals for helping them do it. Here are their quotes on what helps them get more out of business and life. 1. Hold Back-to-Back Meetings in One Location “If I must have multiple meetings throughout a day, I often aim to set them back-to-back in one location. This way, I maintain efficiency and focus throughout the meetings, setting the pace according to the agenda and maximum time allotted, while knowing we must get straight to the points at hand since the next meeting is impending. Additionally, placing these meetings back to back enables me to maintain a clear frame of mind during the times before and after the block of meetings, since I am freed from the constant self-reminders to be punctual to the next meeting.” â€" Tiffany Pham, founder and CEO of MOGUL, an award-winning technology platform for women 2. Read Voraciously “My first job at Warner Bros. was preparing a daily press packet without internet. I had to read everything physically, clip pertinent articles, copy and distribute them to execs. This job taught me the power one garners by knowing everything that’s going on in business and the world- who’s doing well and might be a candidate for a sale of a popular Warner Bros. TV series or movie and who is in trouble and might need a hit TV series or movie. One needs to be able to converse with other executives intelligently about their business.” â€"Eric Frankel, founder and CEO of AdGreetz, a cloud-based SaaS platform that empowers brands such as Intel, NBC, and Toyota to deploy relevant, personalized video messages that build stronger customer relationships and increase engagement, activation, and revenue 3. Constantly Triage Your To-Do List “The role of the CEO is really to keep the team focused on the most important topics, and it’s important that you do the same for yourself.” â€"Vikram Aggarwal, CEO of EnergySage, a solar-marketplace company that recently secured a $1.5 million Series A round of funding and announced a partnership with Green America 4. Unsubscribe Mercilessly “I get a lot of unwanted email from folks who’ve subscribed me to lists that are irrelevant to me. I combat this clutter daily and find it’s a useful way of removing one distraction from my day.” â€"Apu Gupta, CEO of Curalate, a platform for marketing with images that works with 650 brands, reaching millions of consumers a day 5. Block Time on Your Calendar According to Tasks “It is so easy to fall into daily distractions, forcing you to play catch up the next day. This cycle can go on forever. Time blocking keeps me on track. I schedule a timeframe where I am responding to emails, then the next hour is blocked for meetings, etc.” â€"Jayna Cooke, CEO of EVENTup, an online marketplace for event venues that has listed more than 15,000 venues and attracts more than one million consumers a month 6. Connect With Your Passion “Every week I check in and participate with the product and technology teams. Even as the company has grown, I have forced myself to make time to stay connected. As an engineer, I personally enjoy participating in the technology challenges and love to learn about the solutions our team comes up with. Not only does it keep me up-to-date on the latest ideas, but it also gives the team an opportunity to see the bigger picture and ask why? Not all startup CEO/founders are technologists, but each CEO has a passion. Staying connected with your passion will keep you engaged, even when your job evolves to require bigger strategic thinking. Sometimes you have to let yourself have fun with the things you love.” â€"Alex Muller, CEO of GPShopper, a developer of mobile apps with a focus on the retail industry and annual revenue growth of 50 to 70% 7. Limit the Time Spent on Email Every Day “It’s easy to get caught up answering emails all day and feeling like work is being done, but by the end of the day realize that no progress has been made on strategically pushing the business forward. You just spent the whole day fighting fires and solving immediate problems, but the to-do list remain the same as the day prior. Email can also be a bit of a disruption given that it comes in in random intervals and thus can take focus away from projects and work that require a continuous block of time and thinking. As a result, it is really important to invest blocks on time on email every day but also block off times where email is not checked. I do not let email become the default work item because it eventually becomes an insidious kind of semi-procrastination.” â€"William Hsu, co-managing partner of Los Angeles-based VC Mucker Capital, which was ranked as the No. 2 accelerator in the U.S. by Seed Accelerators Ranking, a joint study by MIT and Rice University 8. Spend One Hour Outside Every Day “As a digital-only company, almost all of my time is spent in an office in front of a computer. This is why I make it a rule to be outside for at least one hour a day. Be it walking my dog, riding my bike or just sitting on a patio with friends, I find being outside to be a form of meditation. No matter if it’s broken into 20-minute chunks or late at night, the fresh air helps me relax, release any stress, and restart my mind for the next challenge.” â€"Alex Matjanec, CEO of MyBankTracker, a Brooklyn-based personal finance and banking hub, which helps more than 1.5 million visitors a month make smarter banking decisions 9. Use Technology for Personal Relationship Management (PRM) “Every CEO has a to-do list or actions they need to accomplish daily. While we have many strategic objectives and initiatives that we work on, one daily habit is to target relationships to accelerate our organization’s progress. These include clients, partners, internal team members, and board members. I schedule a weekly agenda of engagement with each of these relationships via a PRM tool, CallPlease, which allows for real-time daily prioritization of my relationship interactions. I leverage the mobile CallPlease app on my iPhone and, since it is a team-based system, my executive admin can support these interactions via a web console through its workflow.” â€"Kris Snyder, CEO of Vox Mobile, a Cleveland-based enterprise mobility solution provider with annual growth that trends above 30%, a recent funding round closing at $6.7 million, and consistent inclusion in Gartner’s MMS Magic Quadrant. Snyder is also the founder of the Global Enterprise Mobility Alliance (GEMA). 10. Prioritize Key Employee Objectives “I know even my best employees have a range of focus and performance. In addition to motivating them through traditional recognition methods, I’ve found that letting them know their personal objectives are important to me earns their best efforts and loyalty. In the past this has included sponsoring night classes not directly related to their job and helping an employee secure a book deal with a major publisher.” â€"James Roche, CEO of Houseplans.com, a San Francisco-based stock home design site that has grown 25 percent year over year 11. Focus on Two to Three Things a Day “I can’t multitask. It creates too much chaos.” â€"Tim Eisenhauer, president of San Diego software provider Axero Solutions, a profitable bootstrapped company with hundreds of customers playing in the crowded enterprise software market with huge venture-backed competitors 12. Have a Family Dinner “We may be co-founders, but we are also mom and dad to three daughters. No matter how hectic running a fast-growing startup is, we make sure to shut off the cell phones and have a family dinner with our girls. While many CEOs are still going strong at 6 PM, we’re passing the green beans and focusing on what matters most to us- our family. What’s most amazing is how many of our business and marketing ideas have come from our twin 8-year-olds and our 11-year-old right at the dinner table.” â€"Scott and Missy Tannen, founders of Boll Branch, a New York-based company with a line of accessibly priced luxury bed linens that launched in January 2014 with first-year revenue topping $2 million, and more than a $10 million run rate in its second year in business 13. Get Home on Time “I try and be religious about the time I leave my house in the morning for work and the time I get back. It helps balance things and ensures I am present, both physically and mentally, with my family.” â€"Jeff Braverman, CEO of snack and candy store Nuts.com, which has grown revenue to $35 million, up from $1.5 million in 2002 14. Exercise Every Day “I try to run every day, and science now shows a positive correlation between running and creativity. It has helped me maintain a sense of balance. It grounds me and offers an outlet on my most stressful days, and allows me to lean into risk and uncertainty. What I find is that many people, especially executives, take the workouts off the calendar when they get busy or are dealing with a particularly stressful time in their careers or lives. It should be opposite. The more stressed out you feel, the more important it is to carve that time for workouts that nourish not only your body, but your soul as well.” - Julie Smolyansky, CEO of Lifeway Foods, which has grown gross sales to $130.2 million 15. Every Morning Read 20 to 30 Unsolved Customer Support Tickets “I think proactively knowing about customer problems can really help you build a long-term intuition about the important things you need to get right when you build your company. And it helps you build empathy with the people who ultimately have to do the hard work of working through those customer problems.” â€"Suhail Doshi, CEO of Mixpanel, an analytics platform for mobile and web that helps companies gain insights into user activity and leverage this data to build better products. Mixpanel now tracks 50 billion actions people take in applications per month 16. Check KPIs First Thing in the Morning “As an organization grows, it’s easy to let a little distance get between the CEO and the day to day. By checking KPIs first thing in the morning, I already know the answer to how we’ve been performing and can immediately move on to the why. I’m in a better position to ask my team important questions, and we can all work more efficiently and effectively.” - Michael Ortner, CEO of Capterra, a web service that has helped companies such as Coca-Cola, Walmart, and Home Depot find and purchase business software 17. Be Unpredictable “Successful people predict trends, but are original and innovative. Have your own workflow, stick with it or break the rules, but try to stay ahead of others by getting away from patterns.” â€"Serban Enache, CEO of global stock photo site Dreamstime.com, which has been used by more than 11 million users since its launch in 2000 18. Always Ask Why “So much of work becomes too focused on the what- the plan we’re writing, the project we’re trying to complete on time, the deadline we missed. We don’t ask why enough, even though it’s the best way to get context for the stuff we’re trying to get done. I’ve found asking it of myself is as important as asking it of the people I work with. It’s critical to staying grounded in what’s most important. I try to keep asking why until I can’t go any deeper. Then get going.” â€"Jay Simons, president of software company Atlassian, which offers team collaboration products including JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket, and HipChat, which are collectively used by more than 48,000 companies worldwide 19. Allow Enough Unscheduled Time During the Day to Think, React, or Write “This enables me to get things done on the same day instead of allowing the guilt pile to build up. I keep blocks on my schedule to avoid overscheduling each day...I am significantly more productive when I am not forced to multitask. Studies have shown that multitasking leads to inefficiency. By creating pockets of time in which I can work alone, I am able to accomplish tasks on the same day and leave time for collaboration.” â€"Dr. Walter S. Scott, founder, executive vice president, and CTO of satellite imagery company DigitalGlobe, which provides images and geospatial content to U.S. government defense and intelligence agencies, international governments, and major online mapping platforms such as Google 20. Exude Positivity “I’ve made it a habit to be a positive, enthusiastic source within my company. Even in the morning, ‘hi’ or ‘welcome’ has huge ripple effects across the organization at scale. It seems simple but has the power to make employees feel valued and appreciated.” â€"Kris Duggan, CEO of BetterWorks, an employee-related goals platform that recently closed a $15.5 million Series A round and is more than doubling active users every quarter 21. Prioritize a Daily To-Do List “I’m a zero-inbox CEO. Occasionally I don’t get there, but each night I give it my all to power through via all available Gmail shortcuts and give folks the response they need as quickly and efficiently as possible. I hate feeling like a delay on my response might prevent Omada employees from quickly progressing their work.” â€"Sean Duffy, CEO of Omada Health, a digital-therapeutics company that was selected by Fast Company as one of “The World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies” 22. Talk to People “This is often described as ‘managing by wandering around,’ but don’t undervalue it. Having random conversations with different people across the organization will help you keep your ear to the ground on what is really happening. Be respectful and don’t interrupt people who are working, but catching someone making a coffee in the kitchen, give them a big smile and learn a bit about their day in a friendly, non-creepy way. You will easily stay on top of the pulse of the organization.” â€"Jonathan Cogley, CEO and founder of IT security company Thycotic, which ranks 2,671 on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest growing companies in 2014, up 760 spots from 2013 23. Prepare Budgets by Initiatives and Expected Outcomes Rather Than by Functions “Thinking about spending this way keeps me focused on how each dollar contributes to building the company.” â€"Mike Zivin, co-founder and CEO of Whittl, an online appointment booking platform for neighborhood businesses, which recently raised a $3.3 million Series A round with backing from GrubHub co-founder Mike Evans, as well as GrubHub’s first VC, Origin Ventures in Chicago 24. Get Coached “Olympic athletes have coaches- so should CEOs. I have had a coach for years, Ed Batista, who I work with at least biweekly to recognize and improve my weaknesses.” â€"Douglas Merrill, former CIO of Google and now CEO of ZestFinance, a big-data startup that uses more than 100,000 data points about an individual to figure out if he or she will pay back a loan. 25. Keep a Close Eye on the Competition “I use the first 15 minutes of each day to read competitive websites and any press they might be receiving. Knowing what our competition is doing or thinking is critical to our ability to both win and keep business.” â€"Darin LeGrange, CEO of Aldera, a company that provides health plan insurers with the back-office technology to handle billing, claims processing, coverages, and more 26. Get Moving “I am a huge believer in walking, and in moving around in general. At the very least, I make sure to get up from my chair every hour and walk the office. Not only does this get the blood flowing, it helps me see what the team is working on and helps spur the spontaneous discussions that lead to new ideas and innovations. I also love to do walking meetings. Instead of going into a conference room, we’ll walk around our neighborhood, a mix of businesses and beautiful old houses and apartment buildings. I find this brings out more natural and authentic discussions, and keeps people in the moment- you can’t mentally check out like you can if you’re sitting at a table.” â€"David Kalt, founder and CEO of Reverb, a marketplace for musical instruments and gear that has raised about $5 million in funding and expects to do $130 million in transactions this year, up from $40 million last year 27. Read the News About Your Industry First Thing in the Morning “The first thing I do once out of bed is read 15 to 30 minutes religiously. I jot down anything interesting for rumination vis-a-vis healthcare, such as Netflix’s god mode, or Jaguar’s brainwave tracker. It’s amazing how many dots you can connect by just reading.” â€"Ahmed Albaiti, founder and CEO of Medullan, a digital health innovation company that works with payers, providers, and pharma on patient engagement 28. Adjust Your Perspective “Every Tuesday at noon, San Francisco administrators test the emergency alarm system, which I now use as a marker for a notable time each week. Every Tuesday at noon, I deliberately try to “let go of all things negative, retain all things positive, and march forward to a better week, and a better you!” Though this started as a personal habit, it’s become a company-wide event across multiple time zones.” â€"Neha Sampat, CEO of digital tech solutions provider Built.io, which powers innovation at the intersection of enterprise mobility and the internet of things (IoT) for startups and industry-leading companies. Sampat also co-founded KurbKarma, was named a “San Francisco Business Times 40 under 40? honoree, as well as one of “50 Women in Tech Dominating Silicon Valley” in 2015 29. Get to Inbox Zero “Anything that’s not actionable immediately, I get out of my inbox. This frees me up to think and focus on the tasks that I know will take up most of my time, like building a team of amazing people who are smrt, thoughtful and motivated to achieve something. That is the number one most important thing in building a company, as I truly believe a company is only as good as what is made up of.” â€"Rick Morrison, CEO of Comprehend Systems, which works with big names in the life-sciences industry, such as Boston Scientific, Astellas, and AstraZeneca, modernizing and improving the quality in their clinical process through cloud-based tech 30. Make a Daily “Top Three” To-Do List “As CEO, my to-do list is never ending, so it’s important for me to prioritize. Typically, I’ll make a daily list of the three most important things I need to get done that day. It really helps to make my day more manageable. As a morning person, I tend to complete those activities before noon, which then gives me time to address other urgent items that come up during the day.” â€"Ratmir Timashev, CEO of Veeam, a data center backup company founded in 2006 that now employs more than 1,500 employees around the world and brings in hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue, with its sights on reaching $1 billion in revenue in the next five years 31. Get Up to Speed With Direct Reports First Thing “Informally, I call each of my direct reports between 7 and 8 AM daily to catch up and get updates on various parts of the business.” â€"Michael MacDonald, CEO of nutrition and weight-loss company Medifast. 32. Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan “I think Evander Holyfield said that. But anyhow, I use the project management app Trello to manage my day-to-day. It’s color-coded between Hiring, Investor, Legal, Sales/Marketing/Press, Product, Admin, and JFDI. Every Sunday night, I get my week prepped by looking at my calendar and my Trello board. Then, every morning, I take a quick look at the Trello board and mentally prep myself for the day.” â€"Jason van den Brand, co-founder and CEO of online mortgage refinancing startup Lenda, which graduated from Silicon Valley-based 500 Startups last year. Since then, the company has raised its first round of funding, grown 40% month over month, and passed the $40 million mark in loans financed through the platform 33. Keep a Short To-Do List “I keep my to-do list short. Every morning I write down the three most important things I need to do that day to move the needle forward. This helps me to make sure I’m playing more offense than defense. It’s so easy to get bogged down in email and other people’s to-do lists that when you look up at the end of the day you realize you didn’t make any progress on the things that are most important. Keeping my to-do list forces me to prioritize and do just the things that are most important.” â€"Ethan Austin, founder of the online fundraising website Give Forward, which has raised more than $150 million and hosts 20,000 active fundraisers at any given time 34. Take Time to Reflect “As a CEO, you can’t be afraid of the decisions you make. But it’s just as dangerous to have full confidence in your decisions. Every day I reflect back on the effects of my decisions that day and how I can improve upon them in the future.” â€"John Yung, CEO of cloud application management platform Appcara, which is used by customers including Sysorex, AIS, HP Cloud Services, and Intermedia 35. Be Consistent and Proactive “I was an avid bodybuilder back in my college days, and to succeed you had to be religiously consistent day after day with diet, nutrition, and training. I applied the same in business. It takes time to create great products and a stable business, so I’ve learned that to succeed you have to remain consistent, especially when you truly believe in something. It’s a two-edged sword that if not managed can also have negative ramifications, so I also try to be proactive to know when to change angles when the need arises. â€"Payman Taei, CEO and founder of Visme, a DIY online tool that has empowered over 200,000 businesses and nonprofits to create better presentations and infographics. Taei is also the founder of HindSite Interactive, an award-winning web agency that helps companies improve their online presence with effective websites More From Inc. 3 Reasons to Be More Curious Now 7 Time Management Mistakes That Are a Complete Waste of Time 3 Things Ultra-Productive People Do Differently Photo of woman reading book courtesy of Shutterstock.

3 Surprising Benefits to Staying in a Job You Hate

3 Surprising Benefits to Staying in a Job You Hate 3 Surprising Benefits to Staying in a Job You Hate A job is something you have to do, not something you have to love. At least, that's what my dad taught me growing up.I don't believe it for a second (he also taught me to be an independent thinker), but the truth is that while loving your job is something we all strive for, only a few of us really get to experience it. In fact, some  50% of American workers are not engaged by their jobs, and a further 20% are actively disengaged. That's around 70 million people in the U.S. alone who don’t love what they do, and the obvious answer seems to be to get out there and find a job you'll like better. Not so fast, peppy.Believe it or not, rapid-firing your resume to every employer in town isn’t the best reaction (at least, not yet). There are some real benefits to not only staying in a job you don't love, but trying to make the best of it. Here are three huge ones.1. To Learn More About YourselfThat urge to run from a job you don't want is a powerful, even somatic one. It's right there in y our gut every Monday morning; a weight that makes you drag your feet as you walk through those office doors.Faced with that, it seems clear that you need to explore what else is out there for you and look around for something new, something better. Sounds good, and  I'm the last person to discourage exploration, but there's one thing you need to do first. You need to love the hell you're in.You can't meaningfully move forward if all you're doing is running from what you don't want. That just leads to hopping from one job to another without any real idea of what you're doing, what you want to be doing, or even who you are. Now, loving the hell you're in is not the same as resigning yourself to something small, limiting, or meaningless. Those are the choices of a victim (and we both know you're better than that). This is about taking the time to dig in, learn, and uncover more about yourself.Instead of simply looking for ways to get out, ponder this: What if this was a test given to you by the universe to see what you’re really made of? How would you respond then?2. To Practice ChoiceIf you're in a job you don't love, it's easy to just strike those days off your calendar until the weekend or your next vacation. Time rolls by. You get wound down. You lose your spark. You feel less than.Sound familiar? But consider this: Focus on how much you don't want to do your job,  and that becomes your experience. Think about how it's not fair that you don't have a job you love, and that shapes your attitude. Get stuck on all the details around you, and they impact your sense of confidence.Give them an inch, and your circumstances will take a mile, stripping your life of any joy, passion, or meaningful stimulus. This is how people get lost in their lives, but there's a remarkable opportunity here, too.The opportunity to not let your circumstances dictate your experience.Regardless of whether you’re sick of your job, are bored sitting at the same desk every day, or are tired of the same faces, you get to choose how you feel. You get to choose how you perceive your circumstances. You get to choose the richness of your experience of your life. How would it be if you chose to treat yourself with kindness and patience rather than beating yourself up for ending up somewhere you’d rather not be? What if you chose to explore what really matters to you rather than just resisting what doesn’t? And what if you made a choice to express gratitude for coming this far? This opportunity to practice choice is golden indeed.3. To Stop Struggling and Start EngagingResisting, fighting, and struggling against your job is really about control. You tell yourself that it's only temporary. You tell yourself that it's not how you want to be spending your time. You keep it at arm’s length so you never have to give yourself to it.Not only does all this struggling in the pursuit of control keep you remote from your job, but it also separates you from the things that allow you to do great work. And, as I learned at some personal cost, it splits apart and compartmentalizes  you.Rather than throwing yourself in, you keep parts of yourself hidden from your colleagues and practice holding back. You become accustomed to not giving your all.But the truth is, you don't get to do great work through resisting doing work, just as you don't get to live a great life by resisting living.Engaging is where great things happen, so put away the oh-so tempting need to retain control, and choose to engage instead. Instead of having lunch by yourself, grab a sandwich with a colleague and be curious as to what’s happening in his or her life. Don’t just sit quietly in your morning meeting wishing it would end already, but look for how you can make someone’s job simpler (or perhaps even raise a smile). And rather than calling it in and doing the bare minimum, consider what strengths and talents you could apply that just might transform things. You might be surprised at what happens.Photo of man staring at computer screen courtesy of Shutterstock.

3 Points On Your Resume That Make Your Phone Ring

3 Points On Your Resume That Make Your Phone Ring 3 Points On Your Resume That Make Your Phone Ring “Hi Jewel. I think I need to approach the job search a new way. The problem is I’m seeing jobs that I know I can do, even though my resume doesn’t necessarily speak to those roles. I’m positive I have the skills, but I’m not getting calls back at the rate I would like.” When a candidate laid out the scenario above, I had a few questions: What are the job titles you’re targeting? What are the areas of expertise you’re emphasizing? How are you demonstrating you’ve done the things the job requires at some point in your (hopefully, recent) past? It’s important that your resume answer all these questions â€" preferably in the initial 6 seconds â€" so that you don’t cause the recruiter or employer to scratch their head and wonder, “Why is THIS person applying for THIS job, because their background doesn’t seem like a fit?” I know you don’t want to do this: but it will serve you best (translation: make your job search shorter) to customize your resume every time. “Customize” does not equal “overhaul” â€" having multiple versions of your resume is a recipe for crazy-making that you’ll never be able to keep straight, regardless of how good your spreadsheet skills are. Customizing your resume for each opportunity simply means spending a few minutes tweaking 3 points. These points are what your resume must communicate in order to make your phone ring. 1. The expertise the ad is looking for. Note that I didn’t say, “the expertise you bring to the table.” You can lull yourself into a false sense of security by thinking that what you’re presenting is what they want, but it’s easy to be wrong here. Make sure your resume presents your expertise in terms relevant to the employer. The best way to know what those terms are is to lift the keywords from the ad itself. For example, if a candidate is targeting a VP, Sales role that calls for, “10+ years’ experience in B2B technology sales and management,” then the 1st area of expertise on the resume needs to be, “B2B Technology Sales.” Even if that candidate has 10+ years’ experience in, say, “Enterprise Solution Sales,” it’s fundamentally the same thing, but those terms are different. Use the wording the ad uses â€" that’s what the employer’s eyeballs are looking for. 2. The brand featured in your profile. You’re an experienced professional, with decades of work history and leadership success, who can come into your next employer’s organization and do a number of things. Great. But make sure your profile says you can do the top 3 things the employer is looking for you to do. The operative word here is, “DO.” Not, “be.” Being a “solid team player,” is not what the employer is paying someone for. The employer is paying someone to do things like, “drive customer acquisition,” and “create the digital experience.” You may be in marketing, and you may have done those things. So, in your mind you offer those skills. However, it’s important that your resume actually SAY those things in those words for the employer or recruiter to quickly make that connection. For example, if your profile positions you as an, “Executive offering 20+ years in digital marketing,” then take a moment to modify that to, “Executive who creates a digital experience that drives customer acquisition…” 3. The proof. How about this: don’t be the 1st candidate of 2018 to tell me your grand plan to, “save your stories for the interview.” Every candidate who told me that in 2017 felt me jump through the computer to physically shake some sense into them, because this concept of savings stories for the interview is the reason why you’re not making it to the interview. The employer or recruiter doesn’t have the magical power to read through the lines. No one is putting the story together. If you have skills the ad is looking for, SAY so, particularly in your bulleted achievements. You can cut and paste achievements on a case-by-case basis. Refer back to the main things the ad is asking for, and make sure your achievements indicate you’ve done those things successfully. The 5-10 minutes it takes to tweak your resume in these 3 ways is time well-invested, and it’s significantly less than the time you spend worrying about why you’re not getting calls back for the jobs you know perfectly well you can do. Speak the language the employer speaks, emphasize what you can come in and actually do, and prove it! Now that your resume says the right thing, find out what the smart candidates are doing to make sure the resume directly reaches the right decision makers. I’m laying that out in, “3 Simple Steps To Cut Your Job Search Time In HALF!” It’s a free online presentation. Register here.

Survey Recruiters want rockstars and ninjas for jobs

Survey Recruiters want 'rockstars' and 'ninjas' for jobs Survey Recruiters want 'rockstars' and 'ninjas' for jobs Nowadays, it’s not enough to just be an employee with ordinary human skills. Recruiters are requesting rockstars, gurus, wizards, and ninjas in their job listings. That’s according to a new survey from job search engine Indeed, which found that quirky job titles like these have been on the rise in the past two years. This past July, the top five job quirky job listings were “rockstar,” “guru,” “ninja,” “genius,” and “wizard.” These otherworldly, magical employees are requested in some states more than others. Indeed found that rockstars were most requested in Idaho, ninjas were most wanted in Maine, geniuses were most wanted in Delaware, and gurus and wizards were most requested in Oregon.Do you need to be a ninja to be employed?Although spicing up the language of a job listing can be a fun creative writing exercise for recruiters, it’s important to remember that first and foremost, a job description needs to clearly delineate the roles and expectations of a job for applicants. The language within a job listing is a job seeker’s first look at what the culture of a company will be like. Requesting a rockstar may communicate a culture that does not take itself so seriously. Requesting a ninja, known for assassination, can communicate a company culture that takes its productivity very seriously.Maybe employers should leave wizards to J.K. RowlingBut for those of us who don’t relate to rock ‘n roll and mercenary agents of feudal Japan, these job listings can feel off-putting. At worst, these quirky job listings can deter qualified job seekers from applying.Even Indeed ultimately concluded that titles like wizards are best left in the world of fantasy, because we don’t naturally search for “wizard” opening when we are job hunting.“Without a cultural frame of reference, using them in your job listings can affect how well your job posting does,” the survey concluded. “Most people search for roles that match their skills and ex perience and  so using terms like ‘ninja’ and ‘rockstar’ in job titles and descriptions can confuse job seekers and put them off from applying.”

Seven Tips to Recruit the Class of 2016

Seven Tips to Recruit the Class of 2016 Seven Tips to Recruit the Class of 2016 Seven Tips to Recruit the Class of 2016 DeZube Is your company looking to attract new grads? According to Accenture Strategys 4th annual College Graduate Employment Study, recent graduates are three times as likely to prefer to work for a small or medium-sized company. Drilling down into those expectations reveals a desire for workplace options that employers of any size can offer college graduates. Graduates are hungry for a culture with opportunities for rapid advancement and the ability to actually love the work that they do, says Accenture Strategy Managing Director Katherine LaVelle. LaVelle says employers will need to provide an employee experience that offers the flexibility to participate in project-based work, allowing for on-the-job learning and the opportunity to work across different roles with a small-team feel. Understanding what graduates want and how your organization can deliverthose opportunities has an additional benefit of boosting your employer brand. Here are seven tips to successfully recruit the class of 2016. Provide More Choices to New Hires As the head of recruiting for an organization that hires 14,000 people a year, Jill Larsen, senior vice president of talent acquisition and people planning at Cisco, competes for talent every day, facing off against the nimble, startup culture of growing companies. It is possible for large enterprise companies to create agility in employment and talent attraction, Larsen says. Probably the fastest way is to harness the many cultures that exist in large companies. She suggests these four tactics for winning the talent race against growing companies: Share employee stories about growth in your recruiting materials and on social media. Larsen suggests using storytelling as a means to showcase the startup aspects of your company culture. Author Carmine Gallo points out that many large companies effectively share employee stories which can also help unite multiple workplace cultures after a merger or acquisition. Look at benefit offerings through the lens of a 20-something. Do recent grads value the current slate of benefits or would they prefer something more novel, like student loan payoffs? Why not ask them directly? Ask how grads view your employer brand. Following up on candidates experiences is a quick way to engage new grads, especially those who didnt choose you or who you didnt select. Those folks help to build perceptions of your company and theres a lot to learn from them. Make talent mobility a priority. How well are you retaining your new grads and rotating them? How many of your interns are you converting with offers in your internship programs before they head back to campus? These are areas we focus on to ensure that our new grads not only join us, but they stay and continue to learn and develop their skills, Larsen says. Heres how other recruiting experts weighed in on engaging2016 college grads: Move early on employment trends. Nannina Angioni, a labor and employment attorney and partner of the Los Angeles-based law firm Kaedian LLP, says smaller, emerging companies move early on progressive employment trends. Larger companies have traditionally been bulkier at the HR level and more reticent to change their ways until they have no choice in the matter an attitude that is not attractive to younger workers, she says. By having workplace policies in place that reflect the needs and desires of a very diverse Millennial workforce, larger companies could begin to approximate their more nimble and edgier competitors in the startup lane. Recruit new graduates into recently established product groups or newly opened offices. If those options wont work, offer customized rotational programs, says Bruce Harpham, founder, ProjectManagementHacks.com. Moving to a new division each six months over a two- to four-year period provides novelty, challenge and growth opportunities, Harpham says. For the best results, ask the employee about their preferences for new assignments rather than simply moving them around. Chase the people who want to work for you, not the ones who dont embrace your culture. Your average tenure for new grads will be much higher if you find people who want to work for your brand and who like the stability of a larger company, says Kristen Zierau, director, Clarke Caniff, Detroit. If you have to change your culture for a handful of people, youre going to wake up one day and not know who you are anymore.
